Thyroid Diet
The Thyroid
Weight gain isn’t always as simple as we picture it to be. It is not always brought about by merely eating too much and not enough exercise. Sometimes there are underlying factors that we fail to see. Hyperthyroidism is one of them.
The thyroid is one of the biggest endocrine glands in the body which can be found below the neck and is shaped like a butterfly. This controls the burning of energy in the body, protein production and hormones. It produces two very important hormones- triiodothyronine, known as T3, and thyroxine, known as T4. These two hormones play a key role in the regulation of the body’s metabolism. A malfunction in the thyroid can result in an imbalance of hormones; one of the side effects of which are weight gain and difficulty losing weight.
Balancing it out
A healthy thyroid means better functions and better production of T3 and T4 hormones, hence more effective weight loss. Eating a diet targeted at keeping the thyroid healthy can be a good way to start shedding the excess weight.
Iodine is a necessary element of T3 and T4 hormones; it mixes with amino acid tyrosine and gets changed into the two hormones. A diet that is rich in iodine is important for having a well performing thyroid. Foods such as fish, seaweed, iodized salt, and shellfish are abundant with iodine.
Maintaining low glucose can also be important since the glucose in the bloodstream modulates the amount of insulin in the body. A controlled amount of insulin can mean a more proficient use of calories and fewer chances for calories to be stored by the body. This can be helped by limiting the amount of glycemic food.
High protein intake is also recommended since it takes more energy for the body to breakdown proteins as compared to carbohydrates and fat. This results in an increase in the metabolic rate of the body. Fish, egg white, legumes, white meat poultry and lean cuts of beef are great sources of protein. Fiber is also essential to helping in the breakdown of food and keeping the digestive system healthy.
Natural supplement
Maintaining a diet such as this can take up a great deal of time and effort, not to mention that you will need to be disciplined enough to stick to it. An alternative to this is a natural supplement that will help the body to maintain its hormone production. Thyromine is a great supplement that can definitely help you maintain a healthy thyroid.
